My research is primarily concerned with how the sense of smell might influence human behaviour. This includes investigating the effects of a range of distinct kinds of olfactory stimuli upon cognition, motivation and decision making. The research comprises both behavioural measures, such as cognitive task performance, and physiological measures, such as EEG, ERP, GSR and heart rate, to examine these effects.

I graduated from the Queens University of Belfast with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology. Under the supervision of Prof. Carol McGuinness my final year project set out to investigate the "Mozart Effect". Having developed an enthusiasm for brain related research, my interest took me to the University of Bristol to carry out an MSc in Neuropsychology. My dissertation examined the reinforcing properties of nicotine in the context of odour conditioning and employed the observation of slow cortical potentials. In particular, the aim was to investigate whether conditioning the preference for odourous stimuli, using nicotine, could be achieved and, if this was possible, whether any neuroelectrophysiological evidence of this conditioning could be demonstrated. I subsequently developed an interest in the olfactory sense and am currently undertaking a PhD in this area with Dr. Kit Pleydell-Pearce.
