Ultrasonic imaging techniques such as TFM provide an effective way to characterise defects being inspected. There is an alternative way which makes use of the information hidden in the scattering matrix and is especially helpful for the characterisation of small (e.g. subwavelength) defects. The scattering matrix describes the scattered field of a defect for different incident  and  scattering angles, and is believed to contain all the information about the defect that can be obtained from a certain array measurement.
