My research interest is to develop innovative composite products and manufacturing processes with high industrial impact by means of Axiomatic Design. As examples, three of my previous works are shown below (Please click the hyperlinks to see the images). My current research mainly focuses on novel automated fibre placement technologies for manufacturing defect-free complex composite parts. One of my invention 'Continuous Tow Shearing' technology is known as the world-first fibre placement technology that can steer the fibre paths without causing fibre buckling defects in manufacturing complex composite components. I'm also interested in applying this design methodology to various fields such as automotive, defence, marine, and machinery in conjunction with my knowledge on composite materials.



Dr. Kim gained his MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering department at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). After his PhD, he worked as a BK21 (Brain-Korea) post-doc for a year, and then worked as a research assistant professor of KIDCS (KAIST Institute of Design for Complex Systems) for another year. In 2010, He joined ACCIS in University of Bristol for ABBSTRACT2 (Airbus-Bristol-Bath STrategic Research Alliance in Composites Technology) project. During the project, he invented a unique tow steering technology, CST (Continuous Tow Shearing), in 2011 to minimise the produce-induced defects of automated fibre placement processes. Based on this technology, he was awarded EPSRC-CIMCOMP (Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Composites) fellowship in 2013, and is further developing the CTS by adding more advanced capabilities for its application to more complex geometry structures. In 2014, he was appointed as a lecturer in composites design, processing and manufacturing. In 2016, he was selected as a member of EPSRC Early Career Forum in Manufacturing Research.
