Andrew Charlesworth began his academic career in 1991 as a lecturer at the University of Hull, then Senior Lecturer in 1996.  He founded the Information Law and Technology Unit (ILTU) at Hull in 1994 to promote teaching and research into the interaction of law and information technologies.

Andrew was appointed Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol in 2001, a joint post in the Law School and Department of Computer Science.  He is currently Professor of Law, Innovation and Society, and Director of the Centre for IT and Law (CITL).  The CITL was founded with support from Vodafone Group Services Ltd, Barclaycard, Herbert Smith LLP, Hewlett Packard Laboratories and the Law Society Charitable Trust.

He researches, teaches and provides consultancy services in a wide range of IT-linked fields - data protection, intellectual property, internet law and e-commerce law.

Andrew sits on the Editorial Boards of the European Journal of Law and Technology and  International Journal of Digital Curation and the International Advisory Board of SCRIPT-ed.  He has previously been co-editor of the Common Law World Review, a member of the General Council and the Media Board of the Society for Computers and Law (SCL), a member of the Executive Committee of the British and Irish Legal Education Technology Association (BILETA) and an honorary member of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BICCL) Data Protection Research and Policy Group.
