Shawanda was born in Kingston, Jamaica where she began her career as a secondary school teacher of history and geography. After achieving an honours degree in Psychology (BSc) from the University of the West Indies, she migrated to Sweden where she taught philosophy, psychology and Intercultural communication for a number of years before moving to the UK to pursue postgraduate studies (MEd and PhD) at the University of Bristol.
Her research covers a range of issues relating to sociology and psychology in education with a specific focus on youths’ aspirations, attainments and their transition into higher education and the labour market. She has a keen interest in methodologies, especially those involving the use of mixed and multi-method approaches to research.
Shawanda was recently awarded a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2013-2016). This study utilises the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England (LSYPE) dataset to investigate the interrelation between educational aspirations, educational and labour market outcomes for Black Caribbean males in the UK from adolescence to early adulthood.
