Shawanda was born in Kingston, Jamaica where she began her career as a secondary school teacher of history and geography. After achieving an honours degree in Psychology (BSc) from the University of the West Indies, she migrated to Sweden where she taught philosophy, psychology and Intercultural communication for a number of years before moving to the UK to pursue postgraduate studies (MEd and PhD) at the University of Bristol.
