Biography

Helen’s previous experience as a teacher and as a Local Authority Advisor (SEBD) brings a breadth and depth of professional teaching experience which is essential to her work with education professionals. Since entering into higher education in 2006 she has enjoyed the challenges of developing a second career, consolidating her experience in teaching, programme management and research.   Helen joined the Graduate School of Education from the University of Plymouth in March 2009.

Helen’s research and publications have mainly been in the field of Special and Inclusive Education, with a specific focus on the inclusion of pupils who experience Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD).  She is currently engaged in doctoral research exploring the ways that teachers learn to teach pupils who experience SEBD. In addition to PhD research Helen has been involved in a number of research projects, including commissioned research for a Local Authority in the South West, small scale internally funded projects investigating the implementation of government materials in schools, as well as a collaborative project with schools and teacher researchers, attracting funding from the DCSF.

Collaboration is a strong feature of Helen’s research portfolio and well as working within her own specific field, she has also enjoyed working on research projects that are focused upon pedagogic and programmatic development and student experience and participation.
