The University’s Centre for Multilevel Modelling (CMM) is recognised as one of the world’s leading research groups in its field. It is based jointly in the Graduate School of Education, the School of Geographical Sciences and the Department of Clinical Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol, in the Bristol Institute of Public Affairs.
In addition to new research, the theme has a strong emphasis on training and capacity-building, which directly addressees the concerns of government and the Economic and Social Research Council about the lack of quantitative social science expertise in the UK.
Much of CMM’s research is operationalised and disseminated via the MLwiN software and associated training materials produced by the team. The software is used by over 5,000 researchers around the world and is referenced as the analytical tool used in more than 900 peer-reviewed journal articles listed on the online database ISI Web of Science. It is routinely used by national bodies, such as the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Office for National Statistics, as well as by local authorities. It is also the analytic tool used in the evaluation of major government initiatives, such as Sure Start and the Children’s Fund.
