More about this group

The Centre for Assessment and Evaluation Research aims to enhance assessment and evaluation policy and practice at various levels of the education system, both in the UK and internationally. The centre will build on the substantial 15+ year foundations of assessment research at GSoE and broaden its scope to include educational evaluation, effectiveness and improvement research.

Key research questions include:

  • How can we more clearly operationalise the constructs that we claim to measure in assessment instruments?
  • How do we develop assessment and evaluation models and evidence to elucidate, inform and support learning processes and school quality?
  • What are the effects of large-scale high-stakes assessments on educational policy? on instructional practice? on the assessment culture in a given society?
  • How do different stakeholders, including test developers and test consumers, perceive educational assessments?
  • What is the impact of individual, classroom, school, and other factors on educational attainment, effectiveness and improvement?
  • How can contextual issues be taken into account in developing, using and interpreting assessment and evaluation evidence?
