Active Volcanism and Magma Intrusion in East Africa

My research interests are in investigating the important processes that govern volcanic deformation and rifting in the East African Rift. I am using a space-based remote sensing technique (InSAR) to measure changes (deformation) of the ground surface, which I will combine with other ground-based observations where available. This will allow me to produce an East African wide map of strain accumulation, and investigate the distribution of short-term volcanic and magmatic deformation events in East Africa.

I hope to test the hypothesis that the conditions favourable to the generation of magma and to the extrusion of lava versus intrusion within the crust are a function of the degree of crustal extension at a variety of scales.
