Active Volcanism and Magma Intrusion in East Africa

Summary

You can find me in Room G10a, Wills Memorial Building.

My research interests are in investigating the important processes that govern volcanic deformation and rifting in the East African Rift. I am using a space-based remote sensing technique (InSAR) to measure changes (deformation) of the Earths surface, which I will combine with other ground-based observations where available. This will allow me to produce an East African wide map of strain accumulation, and investigate the distribution of short-term volcanic and magmatic deformation events in East Africa.

I hope to test the hypothesis that the conditions favourable to the generation of magma and to the extrusion of lava versus intrusion within the crust are a function of the degree of crustal extension at a variety of scales.
