As ever, my interests are in rocks that fizz: limestones and dolomites, but I do occasionally look at evaporites too, and even clastics. I focus on the deposition, diagenesis and geochemistry of carbonate sediments of any age from any where – from those forming today, right back to some of the oldest. I am part of the Carbonates Research Group in Bristol, headed by Fiona Whitaker. I am working closely these days with Mirek Słowakiewicz (Organic Geochemistry Unit, Bristol) on biomarkers in modern microbial mats, Zechstein dolomites and other carbonates.
Current research projects include:
Modern microbial mats of Qatar ...
After nearly 30 years at Durham University, and various places before that (Reading, Göttingen, Sierra Leone, Cardiff, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UC Berkeley), I am now at the University of Bristol.
