Research summary

2900 km below your feet the Earth suddenly transitions from solid rock to liquid iron. I am interested in the properties of the rocks in the 250 km thick region on the mantle side of this core mantle boundary, called D". Intriguingly, these rocks are anisotropic (seismic waves travel at different speed depending on their direction), which is equivalent to saying that they exhibit a textured fabric with a preferred orientation. The nature of this textured fabric is unresolved at a global scale, and its ultimate cause remains elusive. The texture might be caused by the alignment of crystals in ...

Biography

I graduated from UCL in 2007 with a first class MSci degree in exploration geophysics.  I then worked for three years in the seismic services industry, processing and imaging 3D marine data for ION-GXT.  I now work primariy with 3-component shear wave data from permanent broad band stations around the world, I use this data to try to detect shear wave splitting in the Earth's Lowermost mantle, to try to resolve the anisotropic fabric of this elusive, dynamically important region within the Earth.
