Research summary

I am interested in how we apply our understanding of volcanoes to estimate risk from eruptive events. The application of robust, exhaustive risk modelling is critically rare at active and potentially active volcanoes but such modelling is necessary in order to minimise future losses. My current research concerns risk models and how they can be constructed to reflect conceptual models of hazardous phenomena. My aim is to explore and develop approaches for objective, quantitative interpretation of volcanic datasets to inform risk estimation and forecasting methods.

My research necessarily incorporates a global range of case study volcanoes, with particular focus on ...

I received a Masters in Earth Sciences from Oxford University, where I specialised in geophysics and volcano deformation modelling. I later studied at the University of Reading's NERC Environmental Systems Science Centre, where I helped in the development of AVTIS - a volcano mapping radar. I received my PhD from Reading in 2009 for my work on measuring and interpreting lava eruption rate time series data at volcanoes. I moved to the warmer climes of Montserrat in the West Indies to take up the post of Deformation Volcanologist at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (appointed as a Research Fellow at the ...
