Research summary

Volcanic ash is a well-known hazard to aviation with the potential to cause catastrophic engine failure as well as economic damage to airframes. Ash regularly disrupts aviation operations globally, through re-routing and cancellation of flights, airport closures and airframe damage (e.g. in 2009, nine VA incidents reported). The 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull had an enormous impact on aviation and was the impetus for major changes in decision making processes and protocols.
