Many naturally-occurring processes pose a threat to people and the environment. These threats can originate from different sources and systems and differ in both time and space.
The focus of this research theme is the analysis and evaluation of hazardous geologic phenomena and associated risk with emphasis on volcanic processes.
Research on hazardous phenomena includes experimental modelling, numerical simulations, field surveys and remote sensing analyses.
Research on risk assessment includes the formalised use of expert judgement in decision-making for low probability / high consequence events in circumstances of scientific or engineering uncertainty and the analysis of risk perception, trust and governance during crises situations.
