More about this group

This theme investigates the structure of the solid Earth and planetary objects, and how they formed and evolved, requiring a vast array of specialties.

At Bristol Earth Sciences, a large group of people study the evolution, composition and structure of the solid Earth and planets using a variety of techniques.

Seismologists image planetary interior structure; geochemists divulge planetary flavours and trace chemical cycles; experimentalists recreate the conditions within planetary interiors in the laboratory; theoreticians explore virtual worlds.

Current topics range from the crust to the core, and include the composition and evolution of planetary cores, the nature of earth’s core-mantle boundary, the origin and evolution of melts in planetary interiors, chemical geodynamics, the deep Earth water and carbon cycles, and much more.
