As manager of the NERC GW4+ Doctoral Training Partnership, Emeliana designs and delivers a training and career development programme for several hundred PhD researchers in the Earth, Environmental and Life Sciences based at the Universities of Bristol, Bath, Cardiff and Exeter and five Research Organisations*. 

Emeliana is a Chartered Accountant and, during her first career, she worked for a firm of Chartered Accountants in London as their Tax Manager, advising around 100 clients on their tax and financial affairs. Her clients included self-employed business people, actors, musicians, medical professionals, manufacturers, wholesalers and charities. After her career in finance, Emeliana took a career break to bring up her two sons, during which she studied part-time for a degree in geology, a subject she has loved since childhood, at the evening university, Birkbeck College. After gaining a first class degree and winning the Aleksander Silberfeld Prize for the most distinguished final BSc exam performance in the Faculty of Science, she embarked on a second career as a Scientist, carrying out research for a part-time PhD in isotope geochemistry at Imperial College London.

Her research involved the isotopic analysis (Cd, Tl, Pb) of geological and meteoritic samples and phases from metal-silicate and sulphide-silicate partitioning experiments by multi-collector ICP-MS and complex modelling of various ‘late veneer’ scenarios following Earth’s accretion and core formation. These analyses also enabled her to investigate the existence and significance of the extinct radionuclide 205Pb in the early solar system. She submitted her thesis on “The isotopic compositions of cadmium and other volatile trace metals in Earth and chondrites” in late 2016 and passed her viva with minor corrections in early 2017. Emeliana also has experience of using laser ablation ICP-MS to measure the U-Pb ages of detrital zircon crystals in basin and loess samples and assessing the provenance of these sediments by comparing the distribution of U-Pb ages with known tectonic events and using zircon crystal morphology as an indication of their source magma types.
