Research summary

My work focuses on modelling how climate change is affecting the short-term viability (over the next 50 years) of shallow-water coral reef ecosystems worldwide.

In order to predict the future we first need a better understanding of the present, of how environmental factors (such as sea temperature, light availability and ocean pH) control the global distribution of tropical coral reefs today. Once we understand the climatic envelope in which coral reefs flourish it is possible to analyse how the world's changing climate is likely to impact their potential habitat, and identify the new sites that should be able to ...

I did my first degree in physics in the University of Sevilla (Spain) and went on to do a 2-year MSc in particle physics, studying neutrino oscillations. After a couple years I decided I wanted to explore the world, and work on things with more immediate impact. I originally came to Bristol to do a 1-year MSc in Earth System Sciences, and also ended up joining all the outdoor societies I could fit in my timetable. This is how I became a very enthusiastic diver and dive instructor (with the university club UBUC), and after learning of the critical situation ...
