Summary

Biography

After junior hospital posts my early career focussed on the care of people with special dental needs; predominantly people with HIV and AIDS.  This work led directly into my Masters and PhD.  I was appointed Senior Lecturer in Dental Public Health at King's College London in 1997 and took up a chair in that discipline at Sheffield in 2002. I became Head of the School of Oral and Dental Sciences at Bristol in January 2016.

My teaching innovations have involved developing undergraduate and postgraduate DPH progremmes in Sheffield, the introduction of an extensive outreach programme and expansion of courses for dental hygienists and therapists.  My research has focussed on the effect of the mouth on everyday life and the use of this effect to evaluate oral health care. I also evaluate oral health services from other perspectives, employing qualitative and quantitative approaches, particularly with reference to deploying skill mix.
