I am a sociologist with research interests in the sociology of gender, health, especially mental health, media and communications and community research. Working in Bristol Dental School has allowed me to apply my sociological knowledge and expertise to the topic of dentistry. As a result, I have developed new research interests in the sociology of oral health, the sociology of professionalism, and dental education.

I completed a BA (Single Hons) in Sociology and MA in Sociology at University College Cork, Ireland. In 2004 I completed my PhD at the Department of Sociology, University of Limerick on the phenomenon of popular psychology and self-help culture. Since then I have lectured at a number of different H.E. institutions in Ireland, including the Institute of Technology Tralee, University of Limerick and Griffith College Cork. In 2011 I was a Visiting Scholar at the Department of Gender Studies, Queens University Canada. Prior to joining Bristol Dental School in January 2014 I was Tutor Co-ordinator and part-time lecturer at the Department of Sociology, University College Cork.

I am Theme Lead for the Personal and Professional Development section of the current BDS curriculum(BDS 18) and am Theme Lead for Ethics, Law, Professionalism and Social Accountability in the new BDS currculum(BDS21)

As a sociologist, I am particularly interested in teaching a sociological perspective to understanding oral health, both as an individual health behaviour as well as a social phenomenon.

I have extensive experience of teaching sociology and social science to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

I have also supervised undergraduate projects and postgraduate dissertations on a variety of topics.

I would welcome students who are interested in pursing research on: the sociology of health and oral health, the media representation of oral health, and gender and diversity issues in the dental profession.
