More about this group

The Oral Nanoscience group is led by Dr Michele Barbour.

The group is engaged in studying the physical and chemical processes which occur at surfaces and interfaces in the mouth.

We have a number of active projects looking at tooth surfaces, and how we can treat and modify dental hard tissues to resist acid erosion.

We are interested in healthy teeth and also those which are developmentally compromised. We are also active in biomaterials surface science.

We are engaged in a project to modify the surface of dental implants at the nanoscale (see figure) to produce a sustained antimicrobial environment.

We are interested in glass ionomer cements, and exploiting nanotechnology to improve the properties of GICs to create a material with genuine antimicrobial functionality as well as excellent mechanical properties.
