Sadie Slater completed her doctoral training at the Academic Renal Unit, University of Bristol, where she developed in vitro models of the kidney glomerulus using conditionally immortalised human podocyte and glomerular endothelial cells lines. This was followed by a postdoctoral position where she continued to bioengineer glomerular models, in combination with placements at the Biomaterials Engineering Group, University of Bristol and the Department of Bioengineering, Clemson University, South Carolina, USA. During a second postdoctoral position at the Renal group she investigated the effects of shear stress on glomerular endothelial cell permeability and endothelial-to-podocyte communication.
