Research summary

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease and affecting over 100 million people in the European Union countries, and by 2020, OA will be the forth leading cause of disability in the world. The disease frequently affects the hip, knee, spine and finger joints. It is characterised by abnormal changes within major joint tissues such as cartilage and bone. At early stages of OA there is focal loss of cartilage which becomes more widespread as the disease progresses resulting is cartilage loss from whole of the joint surface. Biography

Mohammed Sharif's research career began with his PhD studies sponsored by the Arthritis and Rheumatism Council (now known as Arthritis Research UK) at University College London. He was awarded a PhD in 1991 for his research into autoimmune reactivities in rheumatoid arthritis. After completing his PhD, he moved to Bristol to work on an Arthritis Research UK funded project on osteoarthritis. He was appointed to a HEFCE funded lectureship position in 2001 in Anatomy at University of Bristol and to senior lecturer in 2006.
