Summary

Biography

 Christine Burren is a Consultant in Paediatric Diabetes, Endocrinology and Bone at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. She trained and undertook earlier research projects in Melbourne, Portland Oregon and St Bartholomews Hospital, London. Recent research includes Chief Investigator on 'Do Physical Fitness and Physical Activity influence diabetes control in children and young people?' funded by Diabetes UK. Other active diabetes research collaborations include diabetes prevention and early treatments.

She is Clinical Lead for the Childhood Complex Osteogenesis Imperfecta Service in Bristol and endocrinologist in the Bristol Skeletal Dysplasia Service. Her clinical work with children with rare metabolic bone diseases and expertise in Vitamin D, reflects in her bone and calcium research interests:  osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease), Vitamin D deficiency, hypophosphatasia, and calcium sensing receptor mutations. She is involved in other wider research processes, with roles such as Independent Member on the Trial Steering Committee and reviewer for NIHR.

Principle Investigator in Bristol on an actively recruiting study in Osteogenesis Imperfecta: the multicenter, single-arm study in children 2 to 17 years of age with OI to evaluate efficacy and safety of denosumab (see www.clinicaltrials.gov); Principle Investigator in Bristol on actively recruiting registry: An Observational, Longitudinal, Prospective, Long-Term Registry Of Patients With Hypophosphatasia (HPP).

Member of the BOND ERN (European Reference Network for Rare Bone Disorders) for Bristol Rare Bone Disease Service; approved November 2016.

Affiliate of the NIHR Bristol Nutrition BRU (The National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Unit in Nutrition, Diet and Lifestyle at University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Bristol).
