Christine Burren is a Consultant in Paediatric Diabetes, Endocrinology and Bone at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. She trained and undertook earlier research projects in Melbourne, Australia, Portland, Oregon, USA and St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, UK.

Her main research interests include rare metabolic bone disorders of childhood (Osteogenesis Imperfecta, Hypophosphatasia, XLH and skeletal dysplasias), childhood diabetes (early treatments and improving long term control) and paediatric endocrinology (particularly growth disorders).

Clinical research included Chief Investigator on 'Do Physical Fitness and Physical Activity influence diabetes control in children and young people?' funded by Diabetes UK.

Current Research includes 1. Principal Investigator - Prospective, Multicenter, Single-arm Study to Evaluate Efficacy, Safety, and Pharmacokinetics of Denosumab in Children With osteogenesis imperfecta 2. Principal Investigator - An Observational, Longitudinal, Prospective, Long-Term Registry Of Patients With Hypophosphatasia (HPP) 3. RUDY project on rare bone disorders.

Biography

Christine Burren is a Consultant in Paediatric Diabetes, Endocrinology and Bone at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Bristol. She trained and undertook earlier research projects in Melbourne, Portland Oregon and London. Through her clinical work leading one of the largest children's diabetes clinics in England, she is motivated to find ways to help patients improve their diabetes control for better long term health. She is actively involved in clinical research, including as Chief Investigator on 'Do Physical Fitness and Physical Activity influence diabetes control in children and young people?' funded by Diabetes UK. Other active diabetes research collaborations include diabetes prevention and early treatments. Through her clinical work with children with rare bone diseases and expertise in Vitamin D, she has research interests in bone and calcium, such as Vitamin D deficiency, brittle bone disease (osteogenesis imperfecta) looking at genetics and new treatments for this rare bone condition. She is involved in other wider research processes, with roles such as Independent Member on the Trial Steering Committee for a large national insulin pump research trial.
