Initially, the focus of research was to try and understand the pathogenesis of pituitary adenomas by analyzing differences in hormone gene expression and anomalies in second messenger transduction between human pituitary adenoma biopsies and normal rodent pituitary function 1-11. Over time it became clear that qualitative abnormalities are uncommon and that typical hallmarks of tumours such as proto-oncogene activation and tumour suppressor sequestration are almost invariably absent.
