Research summary

Aerosols play a crucial role in a broad range of disciplines from atmospheric science to drug delivery to the lungs to the delivery of fuels for combustion. Despite their importance, our understanding of the fundamental processes that occur on aerosol particles remains limited. The Bristol Aerosol Research Centre uses optical and electrodynamic techniques to capture and manipulate single particles or arrays of particles, and optical spectroscopy to interrogate their size, composition and morphology. In particular, experiments are underway to improve our understanding of how particles response to changes in relative humidity, the heterogeneous chemical aging of particles, the optical properties ...

Jonathan P. Reid is Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Bristol. He has authored over 200 publications in the areas of aerosols in atmospheric chemistry, drug delivery to the lungs, formulation science and disease transmission. After studying at Oxford and periods as a post-doctoral researcher in the US and as a lecturer at the University of Birmingham, he moved to the University of Bristol in 2004. He was promoted to Professor in 2009.

Jonathan is the current President of the UK and Ireland Aerosol Society and director of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Aerosol Science. He ...
