Fundamental studies of the spectroscopy, photochemistry and reactivity of gas-phase molecules make use of pulsed laser and molecular beam methods combined with velocity map imaging or high-resolution photofragment translation spectroscopy.

These studies encompass photodissociation and reaction dynamics in liquid solutions using a newly established ultrafast laser laboratory. The chemistry of uptake and reactions at liquid surfaces is being explored both for single aerosol particles (confined in optical or electrostatic traps) and liquid microjets, with important applications in, for example, heterogeneous atmospheric chemistry.

The chemical compositions of aerosol particles and of gas samples ranging from ambient air to plasmas used for deposition of technologically important materials are examined using modern analytical absorption and Raman spectroscopy techniques, many of which are developed in our laboratories.
