Research summary

The work of my research is to understand the catalytic activity and biological function in heme containing enzymes. Heme is the prosthetic group found in a number of biologically important proteins (from haemoglobin to catalases) which have a diverse range of biological functions including electron transfer, transportation of gases and chemical catalysis. Our work is focused in three main areas: peroxidases, dioxygenases and the role of heme in the cell. We use kinetic and spectroscopic methods to understand the mechanism and function of heme enzymes, and we collaborate with structural biologists (Prof Peter Moody, University of Leicester) to provide a ...

Since 2018, I am Professor of Biological Chemistry and Head of School at the University of Bristol. I began my career in bioinorganic chemistry with A G Sykes, then moved to University of British Columbia where I worked with A Grant Mauk and Michael Smith. I moved to a lectureship at the University of Leicester in 1995, where I worked for 23 years. Prizes and awards include the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Inorganic Reaction Mechanism Award (2008) and Inorganic Biochemistry Award (2006), a Royal Society Wolfson Merit Award (2017) and research fellowships from The Leverhulme Trust, The Wellcome Trust, and ...
