I am a Consultant Cardiologist in the Bristol Heart Instiute with clinical and research interests in heart failure, hypertension and valvular heart disease.

I am principle investigator for a number of clinical studies in hypertension and heart failure with a particular interest in how the brain and heart intereact through ther autonomic nervous system. I run a hypertension research clinic with Professor Julian Paton and Dr Emma Hart.

Our focus is on using our unique expertise in assessing autonomic function to devlelop new treatments for patients.

Current research projects include:

  • Renal denervation - this is a new treatment for hypertension. Our research is looking at patient selection using muscle sympathetic nerve activity and ways to assess procedural success.
  • Carotid body excision - a our group are translating the basic science ideas from Professor Paton to develop novel treatment strategies for hypertension.
  • NECTAR-HF - is a multi-centre study investigating the effects of vagal nerve stimulation in patients with chronic heart failure
  • PARADIGM-HF - is another multi-centre study assessing a new treatment for chronic heart failure.
