Summary

Biography

I currently work as a Teaching Associate in the school of Biological Sciences here at the University of Bristol. I am here to give students the guidance, techniques and support that will enable them to take charge of their own learning and be "involved" in scientific learning and discovery. 

Previously, I was a Teaching Associate in Biomedical Sciences working in a Molecular Biology research laboratory. This involved a combination of scientific research as well as the teaching of undergraduate, post graduate, international and summer school students.

 

Activities / Findings

Biology Research: I have been involved in research investigating non-coding RNAs and their role in neurodegeneration using the model organism Drosophilla melanogaster. This was followed by research investigating mitochondrial translocases and patched related genes in C.elegans. I am currently working on research looking and nematode assemblages in agriculture.

Education Research: I am investigating how Bloom's taxonomy can be used to assess constructive alignment and how higher order cogntive skills impact learning. 

 

Teaching

As a Fellow of the Higher Education authority and a qualified secondary school teacher I consider delivery of the best possilbe teaching paramount. My ethos for teaching is reflected by the following; "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." - Benjamin Franklin
