This project is part of a long-term initiative that aims to investigate the relationship between archaeology, heritage, and local peoples. It includes the history of archaeology, the place of the remains of the past in the life of living societies, the relationship between archaeology and nationalism, the interaction of different conceptions of the past within particular societies, and so on.
In part, this investigation has taken place at Çatalhöyük. In part too, it has been explored within the framework of a large international conference. The papers from that conference have been expanded into a two volume work published by the Isis Press, the contents of which may be downloaded as a PDF document (518KB).
There will be a further conference in May 2006. The first call for papers may be accessed online at http://www.bris.ac.uk/archanth/staff/shankland/papers.html. All those who are interested in giving a paper are most welcome to contact me on D.P.Shankland@bris.ac.uk.
One particular interest that I have is the life and career of F.W.Hasluck, a pioneer in this field. Hasluck was Assistant and Acting Director of the British School of Athens before the Great War, and anticipated many ideas that were later developed within Social Anthropology. His work is treated in preliminary fashion in the introduction to the work noted above.
Both volumes may be purchased from the Isis Press.
