Powell bust

Cecil Powell (1903-1969) was a British physicist. He studied at the University of Cambridge, and came to the University of Bristol in 1928, rising from research assistant, to Lecturer, to Reader and Professor, until his retirement in June 1969. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1950, for his work on cosmic radiation, which had led to the discovery of the π-meson and the μ-meson in 1947. These observations were made by sending balloon-borne stacks of photographic emulsion up into the sky.

This bust was made by Charlotte Hewer, in August 1967.
