Hoefnagel map

This map appeared in Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the great city atlas published by Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg in 1572. Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600) was the most significant contributor of illustrations to the publication. This map of London is the oldest item held by the Theatre Collection. It shows bear baiting pits on the south bank of the Thames, on the site which was later to become the location of the original Globe Theatre in 1599.
