The Room

The University of Bristol Department of Drama staged the world premiere of Harold Pinter’s first play The Room in 1957. It was performed by students from the Drama Department in the Drama Studio, then located in the Wills Memorial Building. Pinter was a twenty-six year old actor, who wrote The Room to help out an old school friend, Henry Woolf. He went on to become one of Britain’s most eminent dramatists whose plays include the modern classics The Birthday Party, The Caretaker and The Homecoming. The University awarded Pinter with an honorary Doctor of Letters degree in 1998.
