These pages from Hans Schmoller's notebook, held in the Penguin Archive, detail the evolution of the Puffin device. Puffin was the name given to the range of children's books published by Penguin Books. The first Puffin Books appeared in December 1940 and being cheap, colourful and lightweight proved an ideal accompaniment for the many children evacuated during the Second World War from the cities to the countryside. The early Puffin Picture Book catered for the needs of these children, with titles including War on Land, War at Sea, On the Farm and Animals of the Countryside.
