Life in London

The ‘Tom, Jerry and Logic’ the caption refers to are the heroes of Pierce Egan’s Life in London, or The Day and Night Scenes of Jerry Hawthorn Esq. and his Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom, published in 1821 with illustrations by Isaac Robert and George Cruikshank. Egan’s book gave us not only the expression ‘Tom and Jerryism’ for the loutish behaviour the friends liked to engage in, but also provided William Hanna and Joseph Barbera with the names for their more famous cat-and-mouse pair. Here, we see the Regency rakes in Vauxhall Gardens, one of London’s foremost public entertainment venues between the 17th and 19th centuries.
