Areas of expertise |
My research is centred around large surveys, both of extra-galactic and of Galactic objects, carried out using large optical telescopes. In particular, we have long running surveys of dwarf (ie low luminosity) galaxies in the nearby clusters Virgo and Fornax. The highlight of this has been the discovery of an entirely new class of stellar systems, which we call Ultra-Compact Dwarfs or UCDs. Nearer to home, I am a member of the collaborations which are carrying out complete surveys of the plane of our own Galaxy in the hydrogen alpha emission line.
