My current research (in collaboration with Imperial College) is based on manipulating the performance of advanced composites structures as part of the EPSRC High Performance Ductile Composite Technology (HiPerDuCT).
Also, I support experimental research aspects across many projects within ACCIS.
My previous project was the SMARTCOMP partnership with GE Aviation which started in January 2006 and was completed in Decemeber 2010. We examined novel methods of actuation, sensing and health monitoring of composite structures, with topics to include shape memory metals and polymers, electroactive polymers and control aspects.
Previous work examined multifunctional fibres for composite systems and was funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The concept was to develop active magnetic fibres that can be used as a method of power generation for smart composite structures. The potential of magnetic polymer composites was examined for use within electric motors and devices in conjunction with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.
