I publish on literature from the sixteenth century to the present day. An enduring interest is in literary influence, particularly Shakespearean. I have edited many nineteenth and twentieth century novels (including five Penguin editions). In addition to exploring the Penguin Archive, I am currently working on Ben Jonson, Robert Louis Stevenson and Geoffrey Hill.
