My research group studies molecular geometry in compounds by analysing solid state structure using X-rays or computational modelling. Our research also encompasses 'Crystal Engineering' where the aim is to design crystals with useful properties controlled by interactions between and within molecules. Our group's research focuses on the structural chemistry of molecular inorganic species. We aim to understand molecular and crystal structures, and to develop methods for their analysis and knowledge-based exploitation. The exploration of collections of chemical and crystallographic data as a research resource is a major theme of our research. This work, structural systematics, seeks understanding of why molecules adopt the shapes they do, what the consequences of these shapes are for their properties and how they interact with their environment. We use computational chemistry techniques alongside knowledge derived from database studies. This work is underpinned by exploitation and development of X-ray diffraction and crystallography techniques.
