My PhD research involved using organic biomarkers in order to trace organic matter through the soil-water system (specifically in an agricultural context) via hydrological and erosion pathways. My current research forms part of a national DEFRA-funded project called the Demonstration Test Catchments. This project investigates issues related with catchment-scale water quality monitoring and aims to test the hypothesis that it is possible to reduce cost-effectively the impact of agricultural diffuse water pollution on ecological function while maintaining sustainable food production through the implementation of multiple on-farm mitigation measures. My work specifically relates to data analysis and the associated statistical uncertainty, using various techniques for detecting change.
