Areas of expertise |
My current research focuses on fungal natural products, mainly polyketides. The emphasis is on the elucidation and manipulation of secondary metabolic pathways, with the objective of generating "unnatural natural products" with enhanced or novel biological activities. This work has involved production of a "toolkit" for the heterologous expression of full biosynthetic pathways in the GRAS organism Aspergillus oryzae, and is applicable to primary and secondary metabolism from any biological source. Other metabolic engineering work has included the first production of very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in a higher plant, and their further conversion to prostaglandins.
