Areas of expertise |
I am an Archaeologist, with specialisms in Landscape Archaeology; Early Medieval (i.e. Saxon, Viking & Norman)(AD410-1066) & Medieval Archaeology (AD1066-1540); The Anarchy, Castle Studies and Medieval Warfare & Weaponry.
I am additionally interested in Ancient & Historical Technology, and am particularly keen to advance the discipline of Experimental Archaeology, and promote its value as a useful tool for study and research.
I am Co-Director of the Berkeley Castle Project (BCP), a substantial archaeological research project that is conducting investigation into the nature & location, role & function of the Early Medieval Minster (Anglo-Saxon: 'mynster') in 8th-9th Century England; as well as the changes wrought via the introduction of the Norman Castle in the early 11th Century. The BCP conducts an annual programme of archaeological excavation and field survey work (earthwork & geophysics) at Berkeley Castle, Gloucestershire, and is attached to the Dept of Arch & Anth, UoB.
