Areas of expertise |
The Unit carries out: (a) studies to evaluate the effects of treatments and risk factors in patients with cardiovascular disease and (b) methodological research to improve the way in which such evaluations are conducted.
My specific methodological interests are currently about methods (a) to improve the validity and interpretation of observational studies and (b) to inform patients’ preferences about alternative treatments. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) are often extremely difficult or impossible to do, so it is very important to understanding how different design features of observational studies can protect against, or introduce, bias. There is also a need to develop methods for valuing the relative effects of different treatments when evidence about benefits and harms are obtained from different study designs.
