Areas of expertise |
I work mainly on medieval literature and its social and cultural contexts. My PhD thesis considered Chaucer's treatment of love relationships, courtship and marriage alongside late medieval advice literature and letter collections. I'm adapting this into a book, and continue to be interested in the representation of love and marriage in late medieval literature, including in the work of Gower.
In the academic year 2006-7 I worked with Professor Jocelyn Wogan-Browne at the University of York on the French of England project, which helped to develop my interest in how the French and English literatures of medieval England interacted and in medieval multilingualism more generally.
The main focus of my current research is a study of reworkings of episodes from the Old Testament in late medieval English verse, looking at their patterns of adaptation and influence and trying to understand their place within wider cultures of reading and religious practice.
