Areas of expertise The French novel, particularly of the nineteenth century, with special reference to Gustave Flaubert, Jules Verne and Guy de Maupassant.

Specifically, my interest is in self-reflexive modes of writing, and in the enquiry pursued throughout nineteenth-century French literature about the nature of writing. This enquiry includes the relationship between literature and science, literature and pedagogy, literature and history, and literature and travel. A particular focus of my interests is on travel, technology and discovery in the nineteenth century.
