My central research interest is the governance of place, space and territory. My most recent work has examined the informal aspects of political decision making by providing qualitative and interpretive descriptions of the day-to-day working practices that have impacted on devolution and is based on the ‘storytelling’ and narratives of those directly involved. The interdisciplinary nature of my work is reflected in a number of international research collaborations funded by the ESRC, Newton Fund and British Academy. While my work is grounded in the fields of informal governance and place-based policy making it also speaks to the disciplines of management, politics, geography and political leadership. My current project is ‘Tackling the Root Causes Upstream of Unhealthy Urban Development Decision-making’ (TRU3D) funded by UK Prevention Research Partnership (UKPRP) to tackle unhealthy urban development linked to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, obesity, poor mental health, cancer and diabetes.
