Areas of expertise |
Earthquake engineering and structural dynamics of civil engineering structures, especially buildings and long span bridges.
Nonlinear dynamics of structures and large scale laboratory testing techniques (eg. shaking table testing and reaction wall testing) which produce the data with which to validate our models.
I am also working on the development of new testing methodology which combines large scale testing with real-time computer models, a technique called substructuring.

Many radio and TV interviews over last 10 years especially after earthquakes. Tomorrow's World, Horizon, Discovery, etc. have often filmed in the earthquake engineering laboratory.
Public lectures/seminars to professional bodies, schools, SET week, public exhibitions etc. including IStructE Easter lecture (2002) and the BA Isambard Kingdom Brunel Award Lecture (2004).
Two Partnerships for Public Awareness awards. Once of these running since 2000, has resulted in the creation of a schools competition to design earthquake resistant buildings which are then testing on a shaking table. This competition is now run in collaboration with @Bristol and is also held as an international competition in Japan and Taiwan. Many of these events have been filmed for various TV programmes.
