Areas of expertise |
I have research interests in modern and contemporary writing; in romantic and Gothic writing; in literary theory and psychoanalysis; and in postcolonialism and globalisation. I have published books and articles in all these areas, and have given guest lectures and conference papers around the world.
I have spent periods of time at the University of East Anglia, Fudan University Shanghai, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the University of Stirling, before coming to the University of Bristol in 2000.
I am currently Graduate Dean of Arts, which means that I have responsibilities with regard to postgraduate students across the arts departments and also for the Faculty of Arts' research strategy.
I have published four slim volumes of poetry, and give occasional poetry readings. I was for many years on the Board of Directors of the Edinburgh Book Festival, and have been involved in developing arts programmes in rural areas.

Media experience |
I have given radio interviews in Hong Kong, Italy, Spain and the UK, and have twice appeared on TV programmes related to the arts. I have contributed to literary programmes made by the BBC World Service.
