Areas of expertise |
My expertise is in contemporary African literature and culture, with a significant interest in political and social formations. I work on both continental and diasporic African writing, cinema, art and publishing, in both print and digital forms.
I am particularly interested in constructions of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, as well as the demarcations of local and global which define Africa in a transnational, world context.
My research is broadly interdisciplinary, drawing on literary criticism, historical studies, material cultures, sociology and politics, and in recent years I have developed public engagement work around the black and African presence in Britain, both in the contemporary period and historically.
I have additional expertise in contemporary literature and prize culture, especially the Man Booker Prize.
